The unarmed police officer shot and blinded by gunman Raoul Moat has been found dead at his house in Northumberland.

The body of PC David Rathband, 44, was found by police at his home in Blyth on Wednesday night after officers received a report of concern for his welfare.

Police said no-one else was being sought in connection with the death.

Belgium - More evidence for routine arming.

The Belgian police had 11,479 revolvers and 9,884 pistols in 2000 (last available figures). Proportionally for the UK that would be 66,000 revolvers and 55,000 pistols. There are close to 130,000 police officers in the UK. As you can see, this is very nearly one firearm for each officer.

As already discussed, Ruralshire Constabulary has withdrawn the personal issue job mobile phones from everyone on the frontline. Apart from making it nearly impossible to communicate with each other outside the hugely restricted boundaries set by the Airwaves team (apparently we pay per transmission) we now no longer have the facility to phone a recovery service for a stranded motorist, call a refuge for a battered wife or organise a crisis team for some unfortunate, and usually very ill and frightened mental health patient.
